Instagram Launches IGTV – A Vertical Video Platform

Instagram seems to be taking on YouTube by launching a new concept to the video sharing platforms with its IGTV network.

The Facebook -owned app, Instagram initially came in with a whole new concept for videos, which was meant to compete with the likes of Vine. Then Instagram eventually stretched the boundaries of the duration of videos and allowed users to share 1-minute longer videos. Similarly, the live videos feature was blunt enough to take on Periscope.
But now, Instagram has a whole new, standalone app altogether called IGTV to let users watch up to one hour long videos.

What are the main options you get inside IGTV app?

By default, the main screen auto-plays some videos from the accounts you already follow on Instagram. The app shows different tabs like For You, Following, Popular, Continue Watching etc. The Popular tab shows videos that are most-watched across Instagram. If you skipped videos in between, you can continue from where you left off using Continue Watching tab.

How Does This IGTV Work?

The platform is expected to work just like regular TV but with vertical videos.

What Makes IGTV Different From Instagram?

The main difference between IGTV and Instagram is that the IGTV pushes vertical videos only and can last up to an hour. This is probably because it’s going to be meant only for smartphones.

The UI is very streamlined and there’s not much you can do aside from browsing videos. There are only a few categories – For You, Following, Popular and Continue Watching. You can still like, share and comment on videos, just like on YouTube, but it has a slight different concept with the vertical video feature and the hour-long limit.

Where Can I Download IGTV?

The Android app is already available on Google Play and is ready to be downloaded for free.

Click here to download it from Google Play. After downloading, register an account. It’s free and you can start recording videos by yourself right right from there.
